Benjamin Tubb-Hearne is a composer, arranger, and tenor horn player with a deep commitment to brass and wind music. Originally from the UK, he began piano at age five before discovering the brass band world at 11—a path that would define his career. He quickly found his voice on tenor horn, ultimately playing Solo Horn with the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain.
Benjamin studied composition and tenor horn at the Royal Northern College of Music on the prestigious Sellers Scholarship. During his time in the UK, he performed with leading bands including YBS, Brighouse and Rastrick, and Hepworth, while composing for ensembles and soloists such as David Childs, Glenn Van Looy, Matthew White, and the RNCM. Since moving to Australia in 2014, Benjamin has been an integral part of the local band scene. He currently serves as Solo Horn and Composer-in-Residence with Brisbane Excelsior Band. His works are known for being engaging, distinctive, and highly effective in performance, with several chosen as set test pieces for major state and national championships. Notable selections include Moonscapes (2026 Victorian States A Grade), The Keeper of the Winds (2026 Australian Nationals D Grade), A Brisbane Journey (2024 QLD States B Grade), and The Legend of Pandora (2019 Nationals B Grade), alongside multiple solos featured in the 2026 National Solo Championships.
Benjamin’s music has been performed by leading international ensembles—including Fountain City, Fairey, and YBS—featured on BBC Radio 2, and recorded on albums such as Fairey’s Nefarious and Brisbane Excelsior’s 10 Years on Top. Joining the Queensland Band Association committee represents an opportunity to give back to the community, support local bands, and champion new music across the state.
