    Sunshine Brass 2010 concert series

The year began with a renewed focus on music and musical direction and a decision to extend the repertoire, community activities, and personal musical development. “Music in the round” was trialled in the last concert of 2009 and proved popular at the first concert of the year in March 2010, it was decided to continue with this concept.

Previously the band had been playing at the ‘D’ grade level for a number of years and it was decided to upgrade to the ‘C’ grade level. The band also decided to seek a different stage uniform and a maroon shirt was voted as the most appropriate for our region.

    Coolum Civic Centre

This was the perfect venue for ‘Music in the Round’ as the band finally gained good media coverage resulting in around 200 hundred patrons attending. Music ranged from classics like Mozart to ABBA. Ten cornets lined up in front of the band playing “Hey Jude” was an impressive sight. This concert allowed the band to play sections of their ‘own choice’ pieces from the Qld Band Championships.

    Wide Bay Tour

In the band’s 102 year history Sunshine Brass had never been on an official band tour. This happened in May when the band embarked on a weekend tour of 3 towns Gympie for an afternoon concert, Maryborough evening concert and the next day in Wandi for an afternoon concert. The program included the entire repertoire they were to use at the Queensland Band Championships, featuring a number of soloists, including a tenor horn trio, trombone quartet with rhythm section, a flugel, a cornet solo and a euphonium duet. The response from each town was very encouraging and the band performed extremely well over this during this period.

    Maroochydore Salvation Army

In preparation for the Queensland Band Championships a concert of only music for the championship was presented at the Salvation Army. This Thursday night 1 hour concert still resulted in a very encouraging crowd and it was a great practice run for the band. As the championship music was only 35 minutes a guest artist was engaged and on this occasion was a violist Allie Shaw who had just completed a major examination gaining a high distinction in the process. The viola, playing music by Handel, was a perfect balance to the band and all remarked that this idea should be again used.

    Queensland Band Championship

The Championships were held at the Gold Coast for the first time and the band was excited by their prospects because of the number of times that we have been able to perform their program over the past 2 months. The band played extremely well in their new grade, which resulted in a 1st place for their own choice and the street march, as well as a 2nd place in the set piece and the remainder were 3rd places. This resulted in the band placing 3rd place overall with just 1 point separating the 2nd & 3rd positions. The camaraderie between players both on the performing stage, group lunch and back stage was a delight to be part of and bodes well for the future of the band.
