About the QSHBA

The Queensland Services Heritage Band Association (QSHBA) is an incorporated not for profit organisation working in the community and with school and community bands. The QSHBA constitution requires it to manage a band or bands on a non profit basis for the betterment of the community.

Currently the QSHBA runs three bands, the Queensland Mounted Infantry Historical Troop Band (QMI Band), Q'Belles (an all Queensland-all female Brass Band) and the Bayside Combined Schools' Band (BCSB).

Further information on the QSHBA can be found at: QSHBA.

THE AIMS OF THE QSHBA:

·      To form a band or bands of musicians, at least one of which will be youth focused.

·      These bands, as well as operate in a community environment, will have a focus on our military heritage and therefore support other service focused organizations.

·      To provide logistical support to the development and maintenance of these Bands.

·      To provide, through a learners’ program, opportunities for persons to learn to play a musical instrument.

BACKGROUND

The QMI Band traces its history to the early 1950s when the Australian Army Reserve formed three bands to provide musical support to ceremonies relating to the first royal visit of the newly crowned Queen Elizabeth II. In 2005, after 50 years service, the 2nd/14th Light Horse Regiment (QMI) Band was demobilized.

Having lost all the instruments, uniforms and rehearsal venue, the band reformed under the patronage of the QSHBA and with the support of the Queensland Legions Museum and the Queensland Historical Horse Troop. The newly formed Civilian QMI Band performed its first concert at the Rotary Christmas Carols at Wynnum beach in 2005.

THE QMI BAND

The essentially Brass Band is open to anyone from the community. The band maintains a regular performance schedule. and is successful as a stage band and as a marching band.

The repertoire tends to concentrate on jazz, rock and other contemporary styles with the inclusion of electric instrumentation and vocals but we are capable of performing classical music, marches, anthems and hymns as required. The QMI Band is often engaged for ceremonial and dance functions such as officers mess, formal dinners and balls.

The pinnacle of 2007 was the Mudgeeraba 14th Light Horse Troop Tattoo where expert horsemen from all over the world competed in equestrian events. The QMI Band, with the assistance of the Gold Coast City Brass Band, “headlined” the Tattoo with marching displays and musical performances.

The QMI Band has continued to serve the community by providing free performances at nursing homes, benefits such as the Fire and the Flood relief appeals and public events including the EKKA and the Wynnum Spring Festival.

Further information on the QMI Band can be found at: QMIHTB.

CURRENT ACTIVITIES

  • The QSHBA operates a training band for students from the Bayside and surrounding areas of Brisbane which rehearses at the Wynnum High School music rooms.

Further information on the training band can be found at: BCSB.

  • The QSHBA conducts the annual Gold Coast Band Fest. on the Gold Coast which is a competition for any school or community musician and band.

  • The QSHBA has been awarded the rights by the Queensland Band Association (QBA) to host the 2010 Queensland Band Championships which will be held in conjunction to the annual Gold Coast Band Fest. on the Queens Birthday Weekend in 2010 at the Gold Coast.

Further information on the Queensland State Band Championships can be found at: States 2010.

  • The QSHBA has had requests from members of the music community to form an all female band and thus supporting women in our community. The new; all female; all Queensland Band is named The Q'Belles and more information is available at Q'Belles.

FUTURE ACTIVITIES

Further planned projects are:

  • The 2010 QSHBA Outback Tour in conjunction with Queensland Mounted Infantry Historical Troop (the horse troop) to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the formation of the Queensland Defence Force.
  • The 2011 ANZAC concert/tattoo involving military and community bands and horsemen & woman from around the world.

For the future, the QSHBA is in need of support. We are rehearsing the bands with no fixed tenure of premises and have been operating with borrowed and/or member funded equipment. Because of our community and not-for-profit focus, we provide our services to the community, mainly at no cost. The band is available for funded performances at either private or corporate functions. The QSHBA has an ABN and is in the process of obtaining a “Deductible Gift Recipient” status

We would appreciate any assistance and particular in:

  • Obtaining corporate funded performances,
  • Assistance with preparation of grant applications,
  • Obtaining ongoing sponsorship,
  • Suitable long term rehearsal premises tenure,
  • Marketing of our bands services and events.
