Music

Please note that there are two competitions (Gold Coast Band Fest & Qld State Band Championship) operating at the same time in the same venue and some of the requirements are slightly different. In 2010, the QSHBA will administer both competitions. Any competitor can enter either or both competitions subject to the eligibility criteria as stated in the rules.

 

GOLD COAST BAND FEST.

The Gold Coast Band Fest. operates annually on the Gold Coast and is open to all and any Amateur Band & Amateur Musician and is subject to the rules of the QSHBA. Participants are not required to be members of a Band, School or Banding Association and the festival is not restricted to Queensland musicians.

All music will be of your own choice, subject only to the following maximum time restraints.

·         Novice Bands with less than 18 month experience (any age)    -   8 minute concert program (recommend 2 or 3 contrasting works)

·         Special Needs Bands                                                                   -  6 minute concert program (any musical item or items)

·         Junior School Bands or any Band with players under 14 years  - 15 minute concert program (recommend 2 or 3 contrasting works)

School Bands may use ex students, as long as they meet the age requirement.

·         Senior School Bands or any Band with players under 19 years  - 20 minute concert program (recommend 2 or 3contrasting works)

School Bands may use ex students, as long as they meet the age requirement.

·         Open Bands (any age group)                                                       - 30 minute concert program (recommend 3 or 4 contrasting works)

·         Juvenile Ensembles (Under 14)    -  4 minutes

·         Junior Ensembles     (Under 19)   -  6 minutes

·         Open Ensembles      (Any Age)    -  8 minutes

·         Juvenile Solos          (Under 14)   -  4 minutes

·         Juvenile Percussion (Under 14)   -  2 to 3 minutes (each of 3 events)

·         Junior Solos              (Under 19)   -  6 minutes

·         Junior Percussion     (Under 19)   -  2 to 3 minutes (each of 3 events)

·         Open Solos               (Any Age)    -  8 minutes

·         Open Percussion      (Any Age)    -  2 to 4 minutes (each of 3 events)

Please feel free to delete any long accompaniment introductions or cut across long accompaniment interludes or soloists cadenzas. Just mark the "cuts" on the adjudicator's score so we know what you are doing. The audience and adjudicator wish to hear the competitor and not just an accompaniment.

Stage set-up is in addition to these time limits but all performers are requested to set-up and ready for performance as quickly as possible. Stage crew will be available to assist. Percussionists will be responsible for setting up the supplied equipment to suit their needs. Stage crew will be available to assist with heavy items.

The adjudication for all events will be based on the following criteria:

·   Entertainment                    50 points

·   Intonation                           50 points

·   Interpretation of Music     50 points

·   Visual Presentation            50 points           (The adjudicator/s will not be behind a screen)

QUEENSLAND STATE BAND CHAMPIONSHIPS:

The Queensland State Band Championships alternate annually between regions of Queensland and is open to bands and their members who are registered with a State or National Banding Association (such as the QBA). The Queensland State Band Championships are not restricted to Queensland bands and any band and their members, that are a member of  an affiliated banding association, are eligible to enter. The Queensland State Band Championships are subject to the rules of the QBA.

BANDS:

All music will be selected in accordance with the Queensland Band Association (QBA) rules that are available at QBA RULES

The On Stage Music Championship for A, B, C & D Grade Brass Bands will be held in two sessions:

  1. A Hymn and Test Piece Section consisting of:

  • A Sacred/Reflective Item

·         Points & Time Limit     50 points            5 minutes

Was once defined as a Hymn but now any sacred or reflective item can be used.

  • A Test Piece

·         Points & Time Limit    200 points           Time limit as per the score.

The Brass Band test pieces were selected by the Music Advisory Board (MAB) of the QBA and are:

A Grade - Contest Music             - Wilfred Heaton  Boosey and Hawkes

B Grade - Symphonic Music        - Paul Huber         G&M Brand/R.Smith

C Grade - Legend in Brass          - James Curnow    Curnow/De Haske

D Grade - A Northumbrian Suite - Stuart Johnson   G&M Brand/R.Smith

All Test music will be available from Brass Music Specialists.

 

  1. An Own Choice Section consisting of:

  • Own Choice Selection

For Open Grades Brass Bands:

·         Points & Time Limit    200 points           18 minutes (A & B Grades)

·                       "                             "                   12 minutes (C & D Grades)

Can be any music you select.

  • The Stage March

·         Points & Time Limit      50 points           5 minutes

A list of approved Stage Marches is available from the NBCA website at 2010 Prescribed March List - Brass Bands and  2010 Prescribed March List - Concert Bands These are now relevant for all Queensland competitions as well as for National competitions.

 

In accordance with QBA Management Committee decision of March 2010; the State Championship shall be awarded to the band gaining the highest number of points in the Test Piece, Sacred/Reflective Item, Own Choice Selection and the Stage March. In the case of a tie, the points score for the test piece takes precedence.

The On Stage Music Championship for Junior Grade Bands only, will be an Own Choice Program. (recommend 2 to 4 contrasting works)

For Junior Grade Brass Bands:

·         Points & Time Limit     200 points         20 minutes (Junior A Grade)

·                       "                              "                 15 minutes (Junior B Grade)

·                       "                              "                   8 minutes (Junior C Grade)

It is a condition of entry in the On Stage Band Championship that all Open Grade Bands must participate in the Parade of Bands. Junior bands are invited and encouraged to participate in the Parade.

ENSEMBLES:

The Ensemble events will be held as part of the Gold Coast Band Fest. Please check above for the details.

All Test music will be available from Brass Music Specialists.

The Tuba test parts should be available in both clefs, but if not and only if you are not able to play it in the published clef, contact Josh McKechie who can arrange for a transcript once you have bought an original.

Test piece time limits will be as per the score.

All Juvenile, Junior & Percussion events will be of own choice. Maximum time limits are:

  • Juvenile Brass Instruments 4 minutes

  • Juvenile Percussion             2 to 3 minutes (each of 3 events)

  • Junior Brass Instruments    6 minutes

  • Junior Percussion                 2 to 3 minutes (each of 3 events)

  • Open Percussion                  2 to 4 minutes (each of 3 events)

The Adjudicator will be screened for all Solo Events except, at the discretion of the adjudicator, the adjudicator may not be screened for percussion events.

BOTH COMPETITIONS:

Adjudicators and Accompanist copies of Own-Choice music is to be forwarded as per the information at the bottom of this page.

Soloists requiring the services of the competition accompanists are advised to contact the accompanist directly to arrange rehearsals, if required. Each soloist will be emailed the contact details for their appointed competition accompanists. The fee for the competition accompanist is included in the contest entry fee. Fees for rehearsal (if any) with the accompanist are the responsibility of the contestant.

Soloists providing their own accompanist must ensure their accompanist is ready at the appointed competition time, otherwise, the competition accompanist must be used. The fees for your accompanist are the responsibility of the contestant.

Recorded or electronic accompaniment is allowed. The competition will provide a CD player and amplifier that will play most sound files but we do not guarantee that your format will be playable. Also, it will not be possible to do proper sound checks during the competition. Arrangement can be made to do a sound check very early in the morning or late at night, prior to the competition start. Contact the Stage Manager to arrange this if a sound check is required.

It is possible for you to bring your own play-back equipment. All electrical equipment must be tested & tagged in accordance with Queensland electrical safety regulations. Please contact your own electrical contractor for more details on testing and tagging.

CONTESTANTS PLAYING A SET TEST PIECE DO NOT NEED TO MAIL IN THE SCORE FOR THE TEST.

In accordance with copyright conventions, photocopied music will be destroyed at the end of the competition. Photocopies may be submitted for accompaniment and adjudication purposes only, but competitors are required to perform from original, not photocopied, music unless the piece is definitely out of print and an original is not available. Proof of this from the publisher may be required. All original scores can be retrieved from the competition office at the conclusion of the adjudication.
